Reading expectations

Reading Year 3/4

Reading is a fundamental skill in order for children to be prepared for the wider world. Every parent has an important role to play in helping their child to read. A partnership between home and school is essential.
Research shows that daily reading has a huge impact on children’s development. Even though your child will be reading fluently and independently most of the time, it is still essential to listen to children read aloud and ask probing questions to develop understanding. Pick out particularly challenging vocabulary and check understanding.

Year 3 and 4 children are provided Reading Records to keep a record of the pages they have read and show when a teacher or parent has read with children. We expect children to bring their Reading Record into school everyday. Children in Year 3 and 4 should be reading for at least 15 minutes every day to support their reading development.
