Term 4 Week 3

In literacy we have continued to read The Pig Heart Boy. We wrote a letter to Dr Bryce asking him questions about pig heart transplants, sharing our own theories about whether we agree or disagree and why. We also wrote 2 diary entries: one where we were Marlon (Cameron's best friend) stating how we feel about Cameron having a pig's heart. The other was pretending to be Cameron when he goes to visit the pig Trudy, whose heart he will receive. We wrote about the day of the visit and the emotions that Cameron would feel and why. For World Book Day we focused on Roald Dahl's revolting rhymes: Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf. The children loved this version and found it funny. They chose to write their own rhyme or poem based on the story. We also used water colour paints to create a setting for the rhyme.

In maths, year 5 have been learning about perimeter. They have been measuring shapes and learning how to find the perimeter. They have been solving problems involving measures and finding the perimeter. Year 6 have been learning how to find percentages. They have been learning to find equivalent fractions and decimals and solving problems using these equivalences.

In science, we are learning about animal adaptation, so we focused on bird beaks and how bird beaks are different and why. We investigated using an arrangement of resources: tweezers, chopsticks, stones, spoons to pick up the food: pipe cleaners, bird seeds, raisins, playdough, rice. We explored which ones were the best at picking up certain items. Then we watched videos about bird beaks and how they have adapted to suit their environment and diet.

In computing we are using Scratch to explore how selection is used in computer programs. We are learning how to program a condition and an outcome. We have been exploring how to input questions and answers ready for a quiz we will make.

In DT we continued looking at seasonal foods and tasted some different seasonal foods: kale, radishes, spring onions, potatoes.

PE this term is still on Thursday. We will be doing dance with the PASS coach and Tennis.
