Term 4 Week 2 1.3.24

In literacy we have read the first 4 chapters of Pig Heart Boy. We planned and wrote a character description for Cameron - the main character. We looked at how to organise our writing in paragraphs and used expanded noun phrases to describe him. The story is about Cameron who has a weak heart and is waiting for a heart transplant. We used role play to act out a scene between Cameron , his mum and dad and an argument, as his mum and dad have different opinions about having a pig's heart. We also had a debate on how we thought about xenotransplantation - transplanting an organ from one animal to another species of animal. We ended the week by writing some questions we would ask Dr Bryce - the heart surgeon - if we were Cameron. This will inform our letter writing on Monday.

In maths, year 5 have been learning to order and compare any decimal numbers with up to 3 decimal places. We have also been round numbers to one decimal place. We have also been learning about percentages and recognising their fraction equivalent. Year 6 have had a practice SATs week where they sat 3 maths papers, GPS and spelling and a reading paper. Well done to all of them.

In science, we learnt how animals have evolved to adapt to their environment. We researched animals and wrote an information text about how they have adapted and what would happen if their environment changed.

In computing we are using Scratch to explore how selection is used in computer programs. We have learnt what a 'forever' selection does and have been looking at conditions and outcomes.

In DT we continued looking at seasonal foods and how this affects food produce in the UK. This week we have looked at foods that are 'caught', 'reared' or 'processed', and how this can be seasonal too.

PE this term is still on Thursday. We will be doing dance with the PASS coach and Tennis.
