Term 2 Week 4 24.11.23

In Literacy this week we have been looking at poems by Karl Nova. He is a poet who writes and performs  poems to a hip hop beat. We have explored rhythms in his poems and practiced performing some of his poems to the class. We have compared some of his poems and shared our opinions of them.

In Maths, year 5 have been learning to add and subtract improper fractions and mixed number fractions and solving problems involving these. Year 6 have had an arithmetic assessment to recognise areas of strength and development. We have been looking at how to find fractions of amounts and problem solving. We finalised our learning on fractions with an end of unit assessment.

In History, we have been learning to understand how Al-Zahrawi work as a surgeon a 1,000 years ago has had an impact on medicine and surgery today.

In science this week we have started to learn about the next stage of a human's life by looking at adolescence and puberty. We briefly explored this but will look at it in more detail in the summer term through RSE. We have started to discuss the changes both male and female go through when they hit puberty and created a Venn Diagram to present this.

We had Kidzrock in on Wednesday and the children had their own rock concert, although a bit loud and overwhelming for some children, most of them enjoyed it.

The year 6 had a magistrates talk and presentation with Alvin who is an experienced magistrate. He talked about what happens in court and gave the children opportunity to ask questions.

We have opened up the Gold Room at lunch time as a 'common room' for our year 6 children. Packed lunch children can eat their lunch in there. We have a range of activities for them including the WII, iPads, colouring, games and puzzles. This is on a trial run at the moment but the children seem to be enjoying the space and opportunity to have their own space.
