Term 6 Week 1

What a fantastic start the children have had to their final term in Year 1. After being with the children since the start of Term 5, it is wonderful to see how they are growing and developing in preparation for the end of the year.

In Literacy, the children have been learning skills essential to developing their spelling. We have learnt about the prefix 'un' and suffixes 'ing, ed, er and est'. The children added the prefix to a root word and then used their knowledge of the words to use them correctly within a sentence. They finished the week with an introduction to our text 'The Diary of a Worm' and an imaginative opportunity to act out what it might be like to be a worm in preparation for writing diaries.

In Maths, the children have been learning about parts and wholes in relation to fractions. We practically explored creating parts of a whole and used the language to explain this. We then identified half of shapes and amounts and identified when something is equal or unequal.

In Art, the children learnt about the artist Joan Miro and found out about the magical realism style that he represented in some of his artwork. They represented important people and things about themselves in a magical realism style, making some things far bigger or smaller than they actually are.

In DT, the children learnt about the importance of wheels and axles in moving vehicles. They explored a range of moving vehicles and then used resources to investigate which materials could be used to make the best axle and wheels for their own model. The children decided that it was close between using a cotton bud or a wooden dowel for an axle, we then identified that the cotton bud wouldn't allow us to make a very large vehicle.

In Computing, the children learnt about algorithms. The children tried giving each other instructions in order to draw a picture that matched one they had chosen. This led to them realising that they had to ensure the instructions were explicit in order to be successful.

In PSHE, the children learnt about how our thoughts can affect how we are feeling. We focused on trying to have a positive mindset towards things and how this can help us feel happy.

In PE, the children learnt about different running techniques and how we need to use quick reactions to respond to different situations.

In Science, the children learnt how to use observational skills and knowledge of what plants need to explain what has happened to the growth of plants put in different situations.

What a busy week the children have had, despite only having 4 days at school. We are very proud of the children and the positive attitude they have shown this week.

Have a lovely weekend.
