Week 3
Literacy
This week we have continued our learning around 'Meerkat Mail.' The children have learnt about different types of sentences and have been writing postcards with exclamation marks, question marks and full stops.
Numeracy
Year 1 - The children learnt the difference between a 2D and 3D shape. We learnt the names of 2D and 3D shapes and described their properties. The children learnt to use the words corners and sides to describe 2D shapes and edges, faces and vertices to describe 3D shapes.
Year 2 - This week the children moved onto the written method for subtraction and were then able to apply this method when solving subtraction problems.
Topic
In Science we recapped the 3 different types of animals (carnivores, herbivores and omnivores) We also learnt that animals can be grouped in other ways and the children learnt about mammals. We can now explain what all mammals have in common and how their structure varies. Children then sorted animals into mammals and non mammals and some of us challenged ourselves by explaining how two mammals were the same in structure and how they were different.
In Geography we looked at the United Kingdom and named the 4 countries that make up the United Kingdom. We also learnt the names of the capital cities of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and are going to keep practising naming these. The children then labelled a map of the UK with these. Year 2 children also named and located the seas surrounding the UK. We used an atlas to check our answers.
Our R.E topic is learning about celebrations. We recapped the story of Diwali and talked about why many Hindus celebrate Diwali. The children had the opportunity to take part in a dance workshop where they got to re-tell the story of the Ramayana using dance movements. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
