Term 6 Week 4 27.6.25

We have had another busy week.

This week in Literacy, we explored Haiku and Kenning poems. We learnt the rules for a Haiku. They must have 17 syllables and 3 lines consisting of words with 5 – 7 – 5 syllables. We chose a theme and did a brainstorm. Then we counted the syllables in the words. We then wrote our own Haiku poems. We then read some Kenning poems and explored them, looking at the rules. Kennings have short lines (2/3 words) where you don’t mention what the poem is about, it’s a bit like a puzzle. Then the children wrote their own. The children chose one of their poems to learn and perform at the end of the week.

In Maths, Year 5 have been learning to compare, order and understand negative numbers. Year 6 have continued to rehearse for 'Oliver!' or they have been revisiting problem solving using their fluency, reasoning and mental recall skills.

This week in Science, we continued to learn about the circulatory system and focused on blood. We found out that there are different blood groups. That blood is made up of different components.

In Computing, we started to create our own websites about a holiday destination using our ideas from Geography.

In PE, we have been practising for Sports Day. We have also been continuing to develop our skills in Handball.

In Geography we learnt about tropical storms: tornadoes, hurricanes and cyclones, with a focus on Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005.

In RE we learnt how Muslims keep the Earth safe and how they contribute to this.
