Term 6 Week 2

Perspective art in the style of David Hockney

In Maths, Year 3 moved on to finding how many minutes make up an hour and how many seconds make a minute. We put this to the test when creating their own competitions, such as testing who could say the alphabet in the quickest number of seconds. We looked at duration and what this means and used previously taught methods to calculate start and finish times. We also used given start and finish times to calculate the duration of an event. In Maths Year 4 started the week by looking at positional language and how we can related this to angles. We then looked at classifying different types of angles as either acute, obtuse or right angles. We were then able to use this to help identify properties of triangles and the four different types of triangle. Finally we looked at classifying quadrilaterals and their individual properties.

In Literacy, we looked into the life of famous sprinter Usain Bolt. We researched and found out who, what, why, where, when about him and used this information to construct a paragraph summarising Usain Bolt’s life. We finished the week getting into role as Usain, asking him questions and thinking carefully about his answers. The children have been asked to find out any extra facts about Usain and will add to their biography in the upcoming weeks.

In Science, we continued looking at the Eatwell Guide. We created our own menu for top chef Gordon Ramsay to include on his new menu. We had to think carefully about how we could include a food item from each group of the Eatwell Guide. We discussed meals that we have regularly at home and used these as inspiration.

Through History, we looked at houses in Ancient Greek times and compared these to modern day houses. The children were amazed to find out that the Greeks only had clay pots as toilets! We learnt how houses had an Andron, which was only used by men and a courtyard which was the centre of the home. In PE, we worked in teams to practise Javlin throwing as part of our athletics unit and in preparation for sports day.  In Art, we continued exploring the work of David Hockey and specifically looked at perspective. We replicated a perspective drawing, thinking about the size and position of objects compared to how close or far away they are to us, from our perspective, when drawing. Please see a few of many great examples attached.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Daniells and Mrs Ali.
