Welcome back to Term 6, we hope that you had a wonderful half term break in all the sunshine. We are now only 6 school weeks away from the end of the children’s second year at school. This term is always extremely busy trying to cram as much learning in as possible before the children move into Year 2. Next week the children will be sitting the phonics screening, please practise the children’s recognition of their phonemes over the weekend to support them as much as possible.
We also wanted to let you know that as of next week all the children will be back in Ivy Class until the end of the school year. The children will no longer be split between Mrs Russell and Miss Bird, all of Ivy will be together for all of their lessons.
English:
In English this week, the children have been focusing on different sounds each day. They began the week by familiarising themselves with the different ‘ir’ sounds. They then learnt about the different ‘or’ sounds, ‘ou’ sounds, ‘oy’ sounds and finally ‘ar’ and ‘air’. The children have ben practising reading real and nonsense words, reading words to match pictures and spelling words using these different sounds. We have been working hard to familiarise the children with the phonics screening to support them with any worries they may have about next week. Please reinforce with the children that we just want the best for them and we want them to demonstrate their phonics skills.
Maths:
In Maths this week, the children have been learning about quarters. The children were introduced to quarters by finding half and then half again. The children understood that when something is quartered we have 4 equal parts or groups. The children explored finding a quarter of shapes with lots of accurate folding. They then learnt about finding a quarter of an amount, using 4 groups and making sure the amounts in each group were equal.
Music:
In Music this week, the children were introduced to their new music unit – Come Dance with Me. The children explored adding movement to music, they thought carefully about how the music makes them feel and how the body can react in response to the music. The children learnt about how we can respond in different ways to different music. The faster the music, the speedier the movements, the slower the music the calmer and slower the movements.
Art:
In Art this week, the children consolidated their previous learning about primary and secondary colours. The children learnt about the artist Picasso and how he uses colour a lot to enhance his paintings. The children used their knowledge of primary colours to mix the secondary colours together.
RE:
In RE this week, the children learnt about how we belong and how we are all special. The children learnt that we all belong together as part of a class but some of us also belong to other groups. They used these different qualities to explore what makes them unique and how different situations would make them feel.
Computing:
In Computing this week, the children learnt about giving instructions and using buttons to program things to do what we want them to do. The children used bee-bots to explore this concept, they worked collaboratively to make their bee-bot move in different directions.
Please can you make sure that you are accessing the class page on TEAMs, as there are often important messages put on there for you as parents to be aware of.
Have a wonderful weekend.
