Term 6 Week 6

Goodness, another hot week! The children have coped incredibly well during this heat and their overall tiredness at the end of term. We have continued in class with as much learning as possible, although the pace may have slowed in order to accommodate tired children.
English:
In English this week, the children have been developing their simple sentence writing, they had a picture that they had to look carefully at to work out what was happening. Initially the children collaborated with each other to mind map all the different ideas they could about the picture. They have then been encouraged to demonstrate their independent writing skills to write the ideas gathered into sentences. Some children needed support with orally composing their sentences before writing, whereas others needed reminders about capital letters and full stops. Some children were also challenged to develop their writing with adjectives to describe what they could see in the picture.
Maths:
In Maths this week, the children have learnt to tell the time to the hour. They have been introduced to the hands on a clock and how these show different o'clock times. The children have used small clocks to show o'clock times, they have used their own bodies for the hands on the clock. They have also played 'What's the Time Mr Wolf' using a clock to show the times instead of their voices. The children have also had a go at creating their own paper plate clock. It has been interesting trying to encourage the children to spread the numbers all around the clock face and not squashing them all together in one part.
Art:
In Art this week, the children painted their self portraits in the style of Picasso. They were encouraged to use lots of different colours all around their painting, including having some smaller and some larger blocks of colour on the shapes that they had drawn.
Music:
In Music this week, the children learnt more about the 'call and response' that they had been introduced to a few weeks ago. The children used the xylophones with a partner to respond to lines in the song we've been learning. One person in the pair started off with their 'call' part of the song and the other person continued with their 'response' part of the song.
Science:
In Science this week, the children retrieved and consolidated their learning from a couple of terms ago by thinking about how to wash their hands, brush their teeth and sort foods that are healthy or not healthy for us.
RE:
In RE this week, the children learnt about the Muslim celebration 'Aqiqah' and compared this to the Christian celebration of a 'Baptism'. The children learnt about the two events and sorted statements according to which celebration they matched.
History:
In History this week, the children learnt about the history of the police. They learnt about what it was like to be a police officer in the past and how this compares to police officers today.
Have a wonderful weekend, see you Monday for the last week of Year 1, Ivy Class.
