Term 6 week 2

Oh my goodness what a busy week the children have had, all the children have been in and out of the classroom practising their phonics knowledge in every spare second of the day. We are incredibly proud of all of the children participating in the phonics screen - they really tired hard to show their phonics knowledge.

English:

In English this week, the children have been focusing on different sounds each day in order to maximise their awareness in preparation for the phonics screening. They began the week learning all of the different ‘ea’ graphemes. Then they moved on to learn and apply their knowledge of the different ‘ay’ graphemes. In the middle of the week the children learnt about and applied their knowledge of the ‘igh’ graphemes. For the final consolidation the children learnt about the different ‘ow’ graphemes. The children have completed a range of carousel activities to help them remember all the sounds. They finished the week with a fun lesson encouraging the children to show off their writing skills about their favourite toy.

Maths:

In Maths this week, the children have been consolidating their learning about quarters. The children remembered that quarters are found by making half and then half again. The children recognised and sorted different fractions into quarters and not quarters. The children found quarters of shapes by carefully folding them to show the 4 equal parts.

Science:

In Science this week, the children learnt how all living things have offspring. They learnt about the changes that happen to the body as we grow. The children learnt that animals have offspring too and, just like humans, as they grow they become adult versions of the animals. The children were shown different adult animals and had to identify the offspring looking carefully at some of the particular features for each animal.

Music:

In Music this week, the children were reminded about the beat in a piece of music. They listened carefully to the music and found the beat, They then used their bodies to respond to the beat. They learnt about a ‘call and response’ – the children were taught a line in a song and then responded initially in a directed way but then they used their own interpretations to respond to the music.

Art:

In Art this week, the children continued to learn about the artist Picasso. They looked carefully at different examples of his work and then discussed how he represented colours, shapes and themes within his paintings. The children shared what they like about the painting and explained why.

History:

In History this week, the children learnt about Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Elizabeth II. They learnt how these two ladies were alive in different times and because of this some of the things we know about them might not be reliable. The children found out different facts about the two Queens and sorted them into a Venn diagram to represent similarities and differences between the two ladies.

RE:

In RE this week, we continued learning about different stories in the Bible. The children learnt the story of the Lost Coin and thought about the meaning of the story. The children learnt about what it is to be part of a community and together we realised that although everyone is part of groups outside of school, we are all part of a community in Ivy Class. The children discussed the important aspects of Ivy Class and created their own badges to show what it means to be in Ivy Class.

Computing:

In Computing this week, the children learnt about the importance of giving precise instructions to enable something to move successfully. The children used the controls on a bee bot to help them direct each other around the classroom, avoiding any obstacles they came across.

Please can you make sure that you are accessing the class page on TEAMs, as there are often important messages put on there for you as parents to be aware of.

Have a wonderful weekend.
