This week the children have had a week of normality back in the class splits. The children have been working hard on their phonics skills this week in preparation for the phonics screening the second week after half term. Please refer to TEAMS for resources to support your child with this.
English:
The children have focused on phonics in their English lessons this week. Each day there has been a different focus, we started the week looking at different ‘igh’ sounds – igh, ie, i-e. The children then moved on to look at the different ‘ay’ sounds – ay, ai, a-e, then they moved on to learn about the ‘ow’ sounds – ow, oa, o-e and oe. They finished the week learning about the ‘ue’ sounds – ue, ew, oo, u-e. Whilst focusing on these sounds the children have been practising reading words and trying to spot them within the words.
Maths:
The children have been learning about fractions this week. They have learnt about half of objects and shapes and then moved on to apply this learning to learn about half of amounts. The children understood that when finding half, you need two equal pieces or groups. It needs to be fair and equal otherwise this isn’t half of something.
Science:
In Science this week, the children continued learning about deciduous and evergreen trees. We went around the school grounds and were able to identify ivy plants, holly plants, oak tree, horse chestnut, alder and what we thought was a hazel tree. The children used an app on the ipads to help them identify the trees by some of their features.
Art:
In Art this week, the children consolidated their learning about the artist David Best. They used his temple designs and the reasons behind his creations to help them create their own sculptures with things important to them in mind. The children then used wire and Plaster of Paris to create their designs. The children found it easy to shape the wire but not so much to cover the wire with the Plaster of Paris.
Music:
In Music this week, the children learnt about the tempo and pitch in a piece of music. They learnt to copy the piece of music and used different percussion instruments to show the pulse. The children also explored using their voices to portray different characters. The children demonstrated their different voices and the others had to identify who they were trying to be.
Computing:
In Computing this week, the children learnt about the importance of clear labels to help with grouping objects. They learnt that things can be categorized and grouped in different ways but we have to be specific with our labels to ensure things get categorised how we intend them to be. The children then had to find things around the classroom that met the given criteria.
Please can you make sure that you are accessing the class page on TEAMs, as there are often important messages put on there for you as parents to be aware of.
Have a wonderful half term.
