In Maths, Year 3 measured perimeter in different ways. We used the 1cm measured squares around a shape to count the perimeter and also accurately measured each length of a shape, in cms, using a ruler, adding these lengths together to find the perimeter. We then found unknown lengths, using knowledge of the properties of 2D shapes and then calculated the perimeter. Year 4 continued our learning on fractions this week. We started by looking at unit fractions and how these can be represented in different ways. We then looked at comparing unit fractions and how the bigger the denominator, the smaller the fraction. Finally, we looked at non-unit fractions and how the numerator and denominator are used to allow us to represent them.
In Literacy the children used time conjunctions to express 'when' events/verbs were happening. We started to unpick the features of a newspaper report and identified how important time conjunctions are within these. The children used these at the start of their sentences, followed by a comma and as a conjunction, in the middle of a sentence, to join two simpler sentences together. We started to read our key text - Escape to Pompeii which tells the story of two children present at the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
In History, we started to learn about the features of castles and why they are significant in history today. The children thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Leeds Castle on Wednesday which included visiting the castle, the castle grounds, going in the maze (and getting lost for some of us!) visiting the birds of prey and finally enjoying some time together in the play zone. The children all behaved well and must have been exhausted when they got home. It was a great day and we were very lucky with the sunshine!
Through Science the children set up their own soil jar experiment. They predicted what they thought will happen and why. Next week we will make observations to see what has happened.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs Daniells and Mrs Ali.
