Term 3 Week 5

Another wet and windy week in Walnut Class has come to an end.

In English, the children edited and polished their non-fiction paragraphs about caves, turning these into their Hot Write task. They included paragraphs, bullet points, formal language, images and diagrams. They worked really hard.

In Maths, Year 3 moved onto measurement, identifying mm, cm and m. They accurately read and drew lines using these units of measurements and found which unit an object would be measured in and why. They started to convert measurements e.g. understanding that 10mm=1cm and therefore 35mm=3.5cm.  Next week they will move onto calculating perimeter. Year 4 have been learning about perimeter. We started by counting squares to find the perimeter. We then used addition to find the areas of rectangles. Finally, we finished the week by finding the missing lengths of rectilinear shapes and adding them up to find the perimeter.

In computing we were learning to create circuits to transmit code. We used the micro-bits and connected wires to the pin ports to allow us to send signals via our body and complete the circuit to make musical instruments. Walnut managed to pass the circuit through 24 children!

In Geography, we learnt about super volcanoes - the children were amazed to find that super volcanoes erupt with even more pressure than volcanoes! The children researched Yellowstone National Park in USA, finding out why people visit this place, which animals live there, which plants grow there and how it has been impacted by volcanic eruptions.

In Science, the children carried out an experiment to compare and group rocks depending on how hard they are. They used a simple scratch test to identify if any of the rock crumbled away. We concluded that if a rock is hard it is likely to be an Igenous or Metamorphic rock due to these rocks being created by interlocking crystals. If a rock is soft or crumbly, it is likely to be a sedimentary rock containing fossils.

In Art we are now at the stage of creating our final Batik pieces. Please could we have as many donations of old pillowcases or old t-shirts so that the children can create these final pieces. Without these donations, the project cannot go ahead. Thank you for your continued support.

Next week, Walnut Class have the chance to showcase all of their learning with you through our class assembly. Please come along ready for us to begin at 9am.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Daniells and Mrs Ali
