Term 1, Week 3 - 18/9/26

🌟 Rowan Class Weekly Update 🌟

We have now completed two full weeks, and everyone is really starting to get used to our routines! 🎉 A huge well done to all the children for settling back into school life, working hard, and making positive choices. We are very proud of you! 👏😊

✍️ English

This week, we have started exploring Goodnight Mister Tom. 📖🎬 We have met William Beech and are beginning to understand his character, as well as watching how his relationship with Mr Tom begins to develop. We have also been thinking about what life would have been like for a child who was evacuated during the Second World War. 🧳🚂

The children have been using expanded noun phrases to create detailed descriptions of William and have explored the key features of diary writing. 📝 We finished the week by putting all of these skills together and writing a diary entry from William's point of view. Some fantastic writing! ⭐

🔢 Maths

Year 5

Year 5 have continued exploring place value and have been working hard with some very big numbers! 🔢🧠

They have been learning to read, write, compare and order numbers up to 1,000,000, as well as identifying the value of different digits. They have also been partitioning numbers and ordering them in ascending and descending order. 📈📉

Year 6

Year 6 have been busy exploring positive and negative numbers. ➕➖ They have been completing number lines, comparing numbers, and learning how to add and subtract negative numbers.

They have also been developing their rounding skills, rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000 and 1,000,000. 🎯

🔬 Science

In Science, we have been putting our memories to the test! 🐾 We completed some retrieval activities based on animal groups and their features, revisiting our previous learning and seeing just how much we could remember. 🐟🐸🐦🐶

🏛️ History

This week, we became historians! 🔎📜 We explored a range of historical events and worked on placing them in chronological order on a timeline using pictures and dates. ⏳

❤️ PSHE

In PSHE, we have been learning about physical activity and the importance of movement. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ We discussed how being active can help keep both our bodies and minds healthy and happy. 💪😊

⚽🏀 PE

We have continued developing our skills in Football ⚽ and Basketball 🏀, with lots of focus on teamwork, communication and improving our technique.

We've also been putting on our running shoes and practising for Sports Day! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️💨 We can't wait to put all that practice into action!

🎓 Year 6 Secondary School Information

Secondary schools are now holding their Open Days and Open Evenings. 🏫 We strongly encourage Year 6 families to take the opportunity to visit schools, with their children, and find out which school feels right for them.

If you are visiting a secondary school during the school day, please let us know beforehand and remember to order a school dinner if your child requires one. 🍽️

📅 The deadline for secondary school applications is 2nd November 2026.
