Another lovely week at school takes us closer to the Easter holidays and lots more learning opportunities in the classroom. Thank you to all those parents that attended parents evening this week, we hope you found it beneficial to talk to us about your children. Please come and ask us if you have any questions about their learning.
English:
In English this week, the children have been thinking about their own ideas for a repeating poem. The children have thought carefully about how an animal of their own choosing behaves and the things they might do, for example: eating, laying, hunting etc. The children then used these ideas from their plan to write their own poems. They were taught about the concept of the poem repeating and they used this as a prompt for their own work. The children were reminded about the features of sentences, including capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. They tried hard to remember this in their writing.
Maths:
In Maths this week, the children have been consolidating their learning about length by accurately measuring objects around the classroom using a ruler. They then progressed to learn about height. They were taught about the vocabulary taller and shorter. The children used their learning of this vocabulary to identify objects in the playground that are taller than a metre and shorter than a metre.
Thank you ever so much for your support with the use of TT Rockstars, Ivy were lucky enough to win the award for the second time this week, which we are very proud of. Please continue encouraging your child to practise their times tables on TT Rockstars.
Science:
In Science this week, the children learnt about the importance of maintaining good hygiene. They learnt about why we wash our hands with soap and water and not just water. Many of the children were amazed to see how easily germs could spread just by touching another person or object after coughing, sneezing or generally having dirty hands. They were able to see how the soap could protect their hands from germs due to the soap repelling the germs when used.
DT:
In DT this week, the children made the pizzas they have been waiting all term to make. The children learnt about the importance of washing their hands before touching any food preparation areas or any food. They learnt about using knives safely in order to cut the food required. Unfortunately, we were unable to cook our pizzas at school but all the children were incredibly excited to take their pizzas home to show their families.
Art:
In Art this week, the children used their background designs to paint their canvases. They also created some unique poses that were then printed, cut out and stuck onto their canvases. These created their own unique piece of artwork similar to those of the artist Gustav Klimt.
Geography:
In Geography this week, the children compared their home location of Maidstone to the city of Milan. They looked at the features of the two locations and identified similarities between the two. The children also began to look at things that make the two locations different.
RE:
In RE this week, the children learnt about the story of the prophet Muhammad and what happened to him during the celebrations of Eid. They learnt about the importance of this story for the festival of Ramadan and Eid. The children thought about the message this story gives to believers.
Computing:
In Computing this week, the children have developed their use of the app Scratch. They learnt how to change their code so instead of having multiple instructions that were the same, they could change the numbers on each part. The children then added other information to their codes to move their sprite around the screen.
Please ensure you read with your child and write it in their reading record to help us to know who has read, we have noticed a continual decline in the number of children reading at home which is of great concern especially due to the importance of children using their phonics to decode words.
Have a wonderful weekend.
