Term 2 week 5

Oh my goodness, where on earth are these weeks going now. Week 5 over and done with and what a busy week it has been for the children.
English:
In English, the children have really been working hard on their handwriting. We have been learning about the letters that go up and over like r, n, m, h and others. The children carefully practised their letters trying to remember their lead in lines that we should be doing in Year 1. The children have also learnt the trigraph 'ire', they learnt the sound and then thought about some words that used it like: fire, wire, hire, tired to name a few. The children used their phonics to write the 'ire' words that matched the pictures. They have also practiced independently writing about a visit to a bakery.
Maths:
In Maths, the children continued learning about how to represent numbers using tens and ones. The children learnt about how to partition numbers up to 30 into tens and ones. They have been looking at different representations of numbers; identified the amounts shown and written the corresponding numeral. The children have also begun to identify their numbers to 50 using number lines.
DT:
In DT, the children revisited three famous landmarks in London - The Shard, Tower Bridge and The White Tower in The Tower of London. They looked at the structure and shape of these buildings and then designed their own. The children had to think carefully about the shape of their building and how they were going to make it. The children need to collect any cardboard boxes, toilet roll tubes, or plastic trays to make their model next week.
Science:
In Science, the children learnt about the properties of different materials and how the shapes of solid objects can sometimes be changed. The children explored different wooden, plastic, rubber, paper, cardboard and fabric objects. They tried squashing, stretching, bending and twisting the objects to see if the material it was made from would change at all. The children were fascinated to see that some plastic objects couldn't be changed whilst others could depending on the thickness or type of plastic.
Music:
We have been continuing to rehearse our songs for the Nativity performances in a few weeks time.
PSHE:
We revisited a previous lesson about how different things can make us feel different emotions. The children discussed and drew experiences or opportunities that made them feel happy, sad, angry, excited.
RE:
In RE, we shared the story 'Jonah and the Whale' and thought carefully about what happens in the story. The children discussed the story in small groups and shared their ideas on the messages about God that the story suggests. They came up with ideas like: God protects people. He is watching over people and he forgives people.
History:
In History, the children developed their learning about the Great Fire of London. They learnt that we can find out information about the past from different sources. The children found out that we can have primary and secondary sources of information that help us to learn about the past. The children looked at different sources and answered questions about the Great Fire.
Great Fire of London Workshop:
The children really enjoyed watching the story of the Great Fire of London through a theatre show. They learnt how the fire started, why it spread so quickly and how they got the fire under control and eventually stopped it from spreading. Most importantly, the children learnt why this was a significant historical event. We learnt that after the Great Fire of London, houses were built out of stone rather than wood. We got to know all of this information because of Samuel Pepy's diary. At the end of the show, the children worked together to re-build the city of London. It was a wonderful experience for the children, they all thoroughly enjoyed it.
Just a couple of notes to say:
  • please bring in costumes for the Nativity for Monday 1st December
  • please continue collecting recycling and bring it into school, the children will need it to build their models they've designed in DT.
Have a wonderful weekend, see you on Monday morning.
