In English, we have started reading Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman. We have discovered that Cameron (main character) has a heart condition and needs a heart transplant. Due to there being a lack of human hearts available, it is suggested that a pig’s heart is transplanted into Cameron’s body. This causes conflict between his parents as his dad wants to go ahead with this and his mum doesn’t. We spent this week writing a character description for Cameron so we could understand him more. We also did some drama and had a debate about our thoughts on putting a pig heart into a human. This raised some fascination points and questions.
This week in Maths, Year 5 have been learning to identify percentages as fractions, percentages as decimals and equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. Year 6 have had a practice SATS week. This has allowed them to see what the SATS papers look like and to address gaps and misconceptions in their learning.
In Science, we explored how birds’ beaks have adapted over time to suit their environment and diet. We investigated using a variety of tools and bird ‘food’ to see what tool worked best determining the type of bird that might have this shaped beak.
In DT, we designed a meal that was high in protein and explored the different foods and their nutritional value.
In RE, we explored what forgiveness is and how Jesus forgave others. This led to some good questions and debates.
In PE, we continued our dance and tennis topics. The Mission Impossible dance is progressing as we add more moves. In tennis we have learnt how to do volley shots and held rallies.
In Computing, we have continued to explore databases exploring how we can use databases and why.
