Week beginning 27th March

Once again, it is the end of term. The children have been busy learning right up to the last minute!

In Literacy this week, we have taken part in discussions and dramatisations of our book this term. We have some thespians among us who have really taken on the role of Liam and his father. After reading the last few chapters, we finished Cosmic and wrote/recorded book reviews. Many of the children liked the link to space and the humour in the book but would have preferred a different ending.

In Maths, Year 6 have finished the term by looking at Statistics. We linked our knowledge of percentages with our understanding of reading and interpreting data from pie charts. After this we moved on to looking at mean averages. The children seemed very confident in calculating an average from a set of data. Year 5 finished their topic on area and perimeter; they linked their knowledge from last week (finding area and perimeter of squares and rectangles) to help them estimate the area and perimeter of irregular shapes. They then moved on to looking at the order of operations - BODMAS.

We concluded our DT learning this week by creating Mars Rover models. Children considered how to create a chassis using their mathematical understanding of nets. Once the chassis was made, they started to consider how to add wheels and axles. In Science, we focused on retrieving our knowledge from our space topic. The children chose how to present their understanding of Earth and Space with some of them creating quizzes to share with the class.

Unfortunately, due to the weather, we were unable to take part in the powder throwing to celebrate Holi; however, the children looked fantastic in their brightly coloured clothes.

Next term, our topic is:

The Great, The Bold And The Brave

The history of western civilisation begins with the Greeks and the Romans. Their expanding empires helped to spread ideas about architecture, food, entertainment, literature, science, medicine and politics across the globe. As their empires ended, other cultures rose to prominence, absorbing and passing on their own ideas and cultures – creating the world we know today.

We will be exploring a range of different Historical empires through Art and Music as well as looking at the Vikings and their impact on Britain.
