Autumn Term - Week 2

Week 2

This week both the Year 1s and Year 2s have been learning about place value. We have been practising writing numbers to 20 (Year 1s) and up to 100 (Year 2s). We have learnt what DIGITS mean and can recognise the value of each digit in a number.

In Literacy we have been recapping how to use our knowledge of phonics to spell words.  We have also been learning how to structure sentences. This week the children learnt about the jobs that Victorian children did.  We were quite shocked to hear about the working conditions in the coal mines and the cotton factories.  The children role-played and freeze-framed scenes from a Victorian cotton factory and shared how they might have felt. Everyone came up with good thoughts and ideas.

Holly Class did their first experiment in Science this week. We had two raisins and placed them in still water and fizzy water. The raisin in the still water sank straight away. Interestingly the raisin in the fizzy water sank first but then floated and then sank and floated again.  "It's doing a dance!" some children exclaimed. This led to interesting discussions about why some objects float and sink and also how air affects an objects density.

It has been a lovely week with lots of learning and getting to know each other even more.
