Week beginning 9th May 2023

Though it was only a 4-day week due to the bank holiday to celebrate the coronation, we have still managed to pack in a lot of learning!

SATs testing

This week, Year 6 had their statutory testing in Reading, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation and Maths. All of the staff were incredibly impressed with the children's resilience and effort this week. Though tests can be a source of unease for some children, we are immensely proud of the maturity and determination you showed this week. Though testing is part of school life it is important to remember: 

SATs don't measure sports, SATs don't measure art,

SATs don't measure music, or the kindness in your heart.

SATs don't see your beauty, SATs don't know your worth,

SATs don't see the reasons you were put upon this earth.

SATs don't see your magic, how you make others smile,

SATs don't time how quickly you can run a mile.

SATs don't hear your laughter, or see you've come this far,

SATs are just a tiny glimpse of who you really are.

So sitting at your table, with a pencil and your test,

Remember SATs aren't who you are, remember you're the best.

While Year 6 were completing their SATs, Year 5 were learning about Icarus. The children took part in speaking and listening activities to deepen their understanding of dialogue before using inverted commas and speech to advance their own narrative. 

In Maths this week, Year 5 and 6 worked together on a range of problem solving activities. The children were retrieving their learning on place value, times tables, fractions, decimals and percentages and applying it to worked problems. 

In Science, we learnt a little more about how people of the past used sundials to tell time. We hope that the weather will become brighter over the coming weeks to allow us to investigate how the position of the sun affects the length of shadows and how we can use this information to prove the Earth rotates around an axis.

In Art, we have learnt about the many different styles of Greek vases and their uses. The children then designed their own Greek vases so that we can make vase sculptures in the coming weeks. 

Those going to Bewl residential, please remember to bring in your forms if you have not already done so as without them you will not be able to attend.
