Term 2 Week 1 4.11.22

Welcome back to Term 2. What a change in the weather after a lovely half term.

This week we have started to introduce narrative poetry with a focus on The Highway Man. We have annotated part one by looking at the features of the poem. We have looked at the adjectives used, the figurative language, alliteration, metaphors and similes. We have also been performing the poem using varying tone, volume and intonation.

Our focus in guided reading this week has been on retrieval and how we can skim and scan to locate evidence in the text to answer questions.

in Maths, Year 5 have been investigating prime numbers, learning to recognise squared and cubed numbers and problem-solving involving these. Year 6 have been learning to recognise multiples and factors and common multiplies and factors. Using this knowledge, we have been finding equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. We have then been solving problems by applying our knowledge and skills.

In science this week, we have been looking at Carl Linnaeus and the classification system. We did a retrieval practice by discussing what we know about some of the animal groups: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. We will be looking at Living Things and their Habitats this term.

In PSHE, we have been looking at setting achievable goals and thinking about what we would like to be when we grow up. We've had jobs ranging from a zookeeper to someone being the president of the USA.

In P.E. this term we are learning to play Tag Rugby.

Well done to Leon who was one of the 4 children who represented Park way at a Maths competition at Oakwood Grammar School. They didn't win but did their best.
